SOLAR FAQs

FAQs

1. How does solar work?

The solar panels on your roof convert sunlight into Direct Current (DC). The DC flows into the Inverter we place on the side of your house, the Inverter converts this DC into Alternating Current (AC). The AC flows into your Electrical Panel to power your home. When you don’t need all the energy your solar panels are generating, it flows from your Electrical Panel to your Meter, which spins backwards and sends the excess energy to the Grid. At night, when the sun is down, you still need energy to power your home, which you get from the Grid – you’re taking back the energy you sent them earlier in the day!

2. How much does solar cost?

That depends on how much energy you use! A household that uses half the amount of energy as their neighbor will pay half as much for their solar system. This is why we ask you for a copy of your last electricity bill so we can evaluate how much energy you use in a year – we’ll present your cost within 24 hours.

3. How much money will I save with solar?

We need to create your personal solar proposal to see exactly how much you’ll save! Complete the short form above and we will show you within 24 hours. We know you’ll love what you see!

4. Do I have to pay cash to go solar?
Absolutely not! 95% of our clients do not pay cash, they take advantage of our financing options. For example: If your average monthly electricity payment is $300, we eliminate that and instead aim to have your monthly solar payment be $150. We love getting our clients an immediate 50% saving on their monthly energy payment!
5. What is the advantage of financing?

If you do not go solar, you will be paying an electric bill for the rest of your life! If you go solar and you pay your solar system off over the next 15 years, not only will you be paying less each month, one day you will not have to pay anything for your energy and that’s pure cashflow for you! If you agree that Buying a home is better than Renting, then you’ll agree that going solar is better than not, even if you finance the solar system over the next 5,10,15, 20 years!

6. Do I get a tax credit for going solar?
Yes! If you get your solar panels installed in 2021, you’ll receive a 26% federal tax credit on the total cost of your solar system. Let’s say your solar system cost is $30,000 – your federal tax credit will be $7,800 ($30,000 x 26%). You’ll claim this on your 2021 federal tax return but we highly recommend you talk to your CPA first. You’re eligible for the solar tax credit whether you pay cash or not.
7. Can I get the tax credit if I lease my solar panels?
Unfortunately not! You need to own your solar system, so a lease or a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) wouldn’t qualify. Like we said above, even if you finance your solar system and pay it over any number of years, you’re still eligible for the full tax credit!
8. Can businesses and Nonprofits go solar?
Absolutely! We love our Commercial Solar clients! We are Residential, Commercial and Nonprofit solar experts!
9. Do businesses get the tax credit too?
They sure do! In fact, on top of the 26% federal tax credit homeowners get, businesses can also receive Federal Bonus Depreciation and MACRS (state depreciation) on their solar system! Please talk to your CPA about this because it’s an amazing benefit to going solar this year!
10. Can I choose where to put the panels?
Of course! We will prepare the most efficient solar proposal for you, in terms of what size, power, color of panels we use, but also which parts of your roof we recommend. The south and west facing roof planes are usually the most optimal. We will review all of this with you and make any changes you would like!

Most knowledgeable person I’ve met when it comes to solar. Even more important, when I had a question O’Hara and associates didn’t immediately know the answer to, they told me they’d find out. No guess work here, just good ole truth and commitment. Recommend this trustworthy crew. Especially David, he would go out of his way to service me and my wife.

My wife and I were tired of paying hundreds of dollars to SoCal Edison, especially with the extreme heat we've experienced the last several years. After speaking with a colleague who had used David from O'Hara Solar to install their solar system, I had to give him a call to see how much I could save. He was very much my solar teacher and educated me on all the questions I had. Following an effortless process of roof repair, solar panel and battery installation and activation with Edison, we we saving money and got a federal tax rebate for purchasing our solar system! David is a must have when making the change to solar energy to power our home!
